There was plenty of light, from the houses behind the beach, from the lampposts by the old Harbourside pool, and the moon which shone over the water. Perhaps that made for a party atmosphere. The little boats close to the shore were so inviting. We barely even needed to wade, to pull one of them in to ankle-deep water. One of the boys jiggled the anchor loose from its sludgy bed. We set off and rowed into the deeper water, sliding by the yachts and mini-cruisers, hoping to see sharks or interesting fish in the dark waters. There wasn’t anything we particularly hoped to achieve, it was just a joyride, and at the end we rowed back to approximately the same place and re-anchored.
